Powder Horn's History
Bob and Penny Horne, former owners of Horne Motor Lodges, founded Powder Horn Mountain in the early 1970's as a rustic retreat community where owners and their guests could escape the hustle and bustle of the hectic modern world and enjoy the beauty and serenity of nature. The formation of the Powder Horn Mountain Property Owner's Association and the departure of Bob Horn saw the mountain transition into a gated community collectively owned by its members. The 1,250 acre community boasts over ten miles of hiking trails, a private campground, an outdoor swimming pool, picnic grounds, a tennis and pickleball court, three lakes, and natural trout streams. A 7,200 square foot clubhouse set on picturesque Bright Penny Lake hosts community social events and private gatherings. As a community hub, the clubhouse amenities include a fitness center, a game room, a community library/meeting area and a kitchen which are available to all residents.
Powder Horn Mountain is located approximately 6 miles from US Highway 421 on Elk Creek Road in the Triplett Valley area of Deep Gap, North Carolina. The towns of Boone, Blowing Rock, Jefferson, West Jefferson, and Wilkesboro as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway and Blue Ridge High Country are all conveniently located nearby. Adventure, fun and entertainment, historical sites, and other points of interest abound in all directions.
Whether you are interested in living here full time or simply want a weekend retreat, Powder Horn Mountain is a unique community that offers something special for everyone. Guided by the Powder Horn Mountain Property Owners Association (POA), we are dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the natural surroundings we love.
