The Blowing Rock
Sitting a breathtaking 4,000 ft. above sea level and dangling over the Johns River Gorge located The Blowing Rock features a peculiar current of air that flows upward from the rock. From the top of the rock you can see Hawksbill Mountain and Table Rock to the southwest and Grandfather Mountain and Mt. Mitchell to the south. Get outside and enjoy nature in one of the Blue Ridge’s most iconic features, Grandfather Mountain. This state park near Linville, North Carolina sits at 5,946 feet, the highest peak on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains and features varied mountain ecosystems, the Mile High Swinging Bridge, Naturalist Programs, a Nature Museum, Nature Walks, and more. Julian Price Lake and Memorial Park
Set at the foot of Grandfather Mountain and adjacent to Moses H. Cone Memorial Park in Blowing Rock, Julian Price Lake and Memorial Park, is one of the most popular and largest picnic areas on the Parkway, offering visitors opportunities to camp, boat, and fish on the lake, or explore the mountains on hiking trails. Linville Falls, Gorge and Caverns
Linville Falls is a spectacular three-tiered waterfall plunging into Linville Gorge, the “Grand Canyon of the Southern Appalachians.” It is accessible from The Blue Ridge Parkway at mile marker 316, where trails lead to the lower and upper falls. Linville Caverns is an active limestone cavern located just south of the village of Linville Falls. The caverns offer an environment for the public to explore the subterranean world of the Blue Ridge Mountains, hear the folklore surrounding the caverns, and learn about the geology of the stalactites, stalagmites, and other formations found in this underground marvel. |
Historical Sites
Fort Defiance
Fort Defiance is a historic home built by Revolutionary War hero General William Lenoir in 1792 that has been restored to its 18th and 19th century splendor featuring over 300 pieces of original furnishings and historic artifacts. The five-acre property includes fine beech and hybrid chestnut trees, a 200-year old boxwood garden, and a family cemetery. Hickory Ridge Living History Museum
The Hickory Ridge museum gives visitors a feeling for the daily lives of early mountain settlers. The museum strives to recreate the atmosphere of a small mountain community around the time of the Revolutionary War and offers demonstrations in hearthside cooking, spinning, hand-sewing, blacksmithing and other mainstays of early Appalachian life. The Jones House
Built in 1908 by Doctor John Walter Jones, The Jones House was originally his home, office and pharmacy. After the death of Mrs. Jones, it was sold to the town of Boone and now houses gallery space, period furnishings and Boone's Cultural Resources Department. It is also the site of many "Thursday Night Jam" sessions by local artists and free outdoor concerts Friday nights from June - September. Moses H. Cone Memorial Park
Open year-round, the Moses H. Cone Memorial Park is one of the most visited recreation areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Within its publicly accessible 3,500 acres lie a 16-acre trout lake and 22-acre bass lake, as well as 25 miles of hiking and carriage trails. Flat Top Manor, the mansion and former home of the Gilded Age textile magnate and philanthropist, holds a Southern Highlands Craft Guild shop and demonstration center, an information desk, and book store. |
